Does the whole bathroom floor need waterproofing?

Under AS/NZS 3740 the required extent depends on the room layout, the shower type and whether the floor is timber or concrete. An enclosed shower on a concrete slab has a different requirement from an open wet-room on a timber floor. We set the extent from the standard and mark it on the plan before we start.

How long before you can tile over a membrane?

Typically 24 to 48 hours depending on the product, the film thickness and the ambient conditions. Auckland humidity extends it. We work to the manufacturer's data sheet rather than to the programme.

Can you waterproof without removing the tiles?

No. A membrane has to go under the tile and turn up the walls. Surface-applied products sold as a fix over existing tile do not meet AS/NZS 3740 and we will not install one and call it waterproofing.

The work

Waterproofing is the only part of a tiling job that is completely invisible on handover day and completely decisive ten years later. It is also the part most often rushed, because it sits between two trades and delays the one that follows.

One trade, falls through to membrane

The person who forms the falls is the person who membranes them. Waterproofing is not handed off to whoever is available that week, because the handover is where most wet-area failures start.

Junctions reinforced, not just coated

Wall-to-floor junctions, internal corners, hobs and every penetration take bandage reinforcement bedded into the membrane. Those junctions are where movement concentrates and where failures actually begin.

Photographed and documented

Each stage is photographed with the room and date recorded. When a building surveyor asks in year eight, the record exists.

Correct coats, correct cure

Two coats at the manufacturer's wet-film thickness with the full cure interval between them. Cure times are set by chemistry, not by programme, and we will not tile over a membrane that is not ready.
