Why does mosaic cost so much more per square metre?

Because you are paying for time rather than material. A square metre of mosaic has hundreds of individual pieces to align and roughly ten times the grout line length of a standard tile. The wall preparation is also more demanding.

Can mosaic go on a shower floor?

It is the best choice for one. The dense grout grid gives grip underfoot and the small format follows the fall to the waste without lipping, which a large tile cannot do.

Will the grout colour change the look?

Enormously. The same mosaic with white grout and with charcoal grout are two different walls. We will lay a sample board with both before you commit.

The work

Mosaic is the most unforgiving tile there is. Every sheet joint wants to show, every bump in the wall telegraphs through, and glass shows the adhesive behind it. The work happens before any mosaic touches the wall.

The wall is made flat first

Mosaic follows the substrate exactly. A wall that is three millimetres out over a metre will read as a wave across the pattern, so we skim and check with a straightedge before we start.

Sheet joints disguised deliberately

Sheets are laid with joints staggered and individual tesserae adjusted at the seams so the grid does not repeat visibly. Laid straight off the sheet, the joint lines show up the moment the light rakes across.

White adhesive under glass

Glass mosaic is translucent and shows everything behind it. White adhesive, evenly combed, with no ridges or bare patches, because every one of them will be visible from across the room.

Cut edges finished, not hidden

Where a feature wall meets a corner or an edge we plan the module so a full tessera lands there. Where a cut is unavoidable, the cut edge is ground and polished rather than covered with a trim.
