Will underlay fix noise complaints in an existing building?

It will reduce impact noise from the floor above if the perimeter is also isolated during the retrofit. It does nothing for airborne noise through walls, and we will say so before you spend money on the wrong problem.

Does acoustic underlay make the floor feel soft?

No, when the system is right. The mat is thin and dense, and the tile above is rigid. If a tiled floor feels spongy, something in the build-up is wrong.

Who signs off the acoustic performance?

The project's acoustic engineer, against their own testing. We install the specified system and provide product documentation and photographs for their records.

The work

Tile is a hard surface over a hard structure, which makes it an efficient transmitter of footfall into the apartment below. Acoustic underlay breaks that path, but only if the perimeter is isolated too. A perfectly installed mat with the tile hard against the wall gives back most of what it gained.

The perimeter is the whole job

The mat is straightforward. The isolation strip at every wall, column, threshold and penetration is what decides the result. One rigid bridge lets impact energy flank straight around the underlay.

Specified against the acoustic report

We install to the acoustic engineer's specified system rather than to a product that looks equivalent. Substituting a mat with a similar rating and a different build-up changes the tested assembly.

Build-up height agreed early

Underlay adds height, and that height has to be found at thresholds, door undercuts and level transitions. We raise it at coordination stage, not when the doors will not close.

Compatible with the fixing system

Not every adhesive bonds to every acoustic mat. We confirm the full system, mat to adhesive to tile, with the manufacturer before it goes into an apartment we cannot revisit easily.
