Can pedestals go over an existing balcony membrane?

If the membrane is sound and within its warranty, yes, and that is one of the system's advantages. We inspect and photograph the membrane first and will not cover one that is already failing.

Do pedestal decks move underfoot?

Not when they are set out correctly. Rocking comes from pedestals that were not individually adjusted or from pavers sitting on three supports instead of four. Both are set-out faults rather than system faults.

How much height do I need?

Around 40 mm at the lowest point for the shallowest adjustable pedestals, more where the fall is steep or where you want insulation beneath. We measure at the threshold first, because the door height is what constrains it.

The work

A pedestal system separates two jobs that fight each other: the membrane needs to fall so water leaves, and the deck needs to be level so furniture does not rock. Adjustable pedestals let the slab fall underneath while the walking surface stays flat, and they keep the membrane reachable.

Level deck over a falling substrate

Each pedestal is adjusted individually so the finished surface is level while the membrane below keeps its fall to the outlets. Nothing is packed with offcuts or shims.

Water leaves, air moves

Rain drains through the open joints and runs on the membrane to the outlet. The cavity dries between events, which is why pedestal decks outlast bedded tiles on most exposed balconies.

The membrane stays reachable

Pavers lift by hand. When a building surveyor needs to inspect the membrane, or an outlet blocks, the deck comes up and goes back without demolition.

Wind uplift and edges considered

Perimeters, corners and exposed high-rise edges are restrained to suit the wind zone. An unrestrained paver on a tower balcony is not a finish, it is a projectile.
